Understanding the Process of Family Sponsorship in Canada

By Andreanna Gayle

Canada is renowned for its welcoming attitude toward immigrants, and one significant aspect of this is its family sponsorship program. For many, the opportunity to reunite with loved ones is a pivotal factor in their decision to immigrate to Canada. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the intricacies of the family sponsorship process in Canada, exploring its requirements, procedures, and significance.

Understanding Family Sponsorship

Understanding Family Sponsorship:

Family sponsorship in Canada allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their eligible family members to come and live in Canada. This program aims to promote family reunification and support the integration of newcomers into Canadian society. Under this program, sponsors commit to providing financial and emotional support to their sponsored family members for a specified period.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for sponsorship, the sponsor and the sponsored individual must meet specific criteria set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Sponsors must demonstrate their ability to financially support their sponsored family members and meet specific income requirements.

  1. Age Requirement: You must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Citizenship or Residency Status: You must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or an individual registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act.
  3. Intention to Reside in Canada: If a Canadian citizen resides outside Canada, you must demonstrate your intent to live in Canada once the individuals you wish to sponsor become permanent residents. However, permanent residents residing outside Canada are ineligible to sponsor.
  4. Financial Stability: You must demonstrate that you are not reliant on social assistance for reasons other than a disability and can adequately provide for the basic needs of the individuals you wish to sponsor.

Types of Family Sponsorship

Family sponsorship in Canada encompasses various relationships, including spouses, partners, dependent children, parents, and grandparents. Each category has its own set of requirements and processing procedures. For instance, spousal sponsorship requires proof of a genuine relationship, while parent and grandparent sponsorship entails meeting financial eligibility thresholds.

Financial obligations of sponsors

When you sponsor a family member to come to Canada, you enter into a Sponsorship agreement. In this Agreement, you provide financial support for their essential needs, including food, clothing, shelter, and healthcare expenses not covered by public services.

Sometimes, sponsors must also meet or surpass the Low Income Cut-off (LICO). This requirement applies if:

  • You’re sponsoring a spouse or partner with a dependent child, and that child has one or more children of their own.
  • You’re sponsoring a dependent child who has one or more dependent children of their own.
  • You’re sponsoring a parent or grandparent.

The Application Process

The family sponsorship process typically begins with the sponsor applying to IRCC on behalf of their family member. This application involves completing forms, gathering supporting documents, and paying applicable fees. Once submitted, the application undergoes thorough review by immigration authorities, including verification of eligibility criteria and admissibility checks.

Processing Times and Updates:

The processing times for family sponsorship applications can vary depending on various factors, such as the type of relationship and the volume of applications received. While some cases may be processed relatively quickly, others may experience delays due to backlogs or additional document requests.
